Culture

The Maison du Parc du Pilat is located in a former silk-processing facility at the Moulin de Virieu in Pélussin. Its permanent exhibition presents the natural environments, landscapes, economic activities, history and future of the Pilat through films, models, sounds and multimedia games.

The Maison Gaston Baty is France’s first Maison des Illustres dedicated to the arts of puppetry. Since May 2022, it has housed the permanent exhibition “La Marionnette, objet de lien”. It presents puppets made using various techniques and from different periods, and explores the figures and cultures brought together by this special object.

The Église Saint-Jean is unique in the Loire département because of its basilica form and coffered ceiling.

History

In Pélussin’s historic quarter, the town’s history can be traced from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance and the rise of silk twisting. Visible points of interest include the castle, which is accessible only from the outside, the pointed-arch gate, the market hall and the washhouses.

The Viaduc de Pélussin is 170 metres long and 65 metres high.

Trails and events

Pélussin has numerous hiking trails for nature lovers, recreational hikers and sports enthusiasts. The Sentier d'interprétation de la soie is an easy, family-friendly circular trail with eight information panels about Pélussin’s industrial heritage.

The Viaduc de Pélussin can be reached on foot or by bicycle. Bungee jumping can be tried at the Viaduc de Pélussin.

The Fête de la Pomme in Pélussin takes place every year on 11 November and brings together apple producers and fairground entertainers.
