L'Hôpital-le-Grand is located along a section of the GR765 Way of St. James, which is used by hikers and pilgrims year-round. The La Mare River runs through the town and forms an ecological corridor that shapes the landscape and enriches local biodiversity. To the east, the Loire forms the boundary of L'Hôpital-le-Grand; at the same time, the A72 motorway crosses the eastern part of the municipality.
When planning a trip, the desire to rent a holiday apartment in L'Hôpital-le-Grand may be the main focus.
Nature and Trails
The 12-kilometre Circuit du Triangle begins in Unias and passes through Unias, L'Hôpital-le-Grand and Craintilleux. As a circular hiking trail, the route connects Unias with Craintilleux. The town is therefore also part of a trail landscape shaped by the year-round section of the GR765.
Leisure in the Park
Hop'Loisirs Park includes a pump track for bicycles, scooters and skateboards. There is also a tennis court available for free use. The park also features an open-air theatre for outdoor performances and events.
Culture and History
The present-day Sainte-Croix Church dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. It has one of the few surviving rammed-earth naves in the canton. Its square bell tower has a chapel on the ground floor and a bell chamber above; each side features paired openings.
The present-day church replaced the former chapel of the commandery and probably preserves some of its elements. A thick wall beside the church could be the only surviving remnant of the former commandery. The Marian Chapel contains a baptismal font that may be a modified architectural element dating from the 16th century. The monumental cross dates from the last quarter of the 20th century.
