Culture and History
The Château du Fayet is a fortified complex dating from the 12th century. Charles de Valois was born there in 1573. The Château du Fayet and its terraces were listed as historic monuments by a decree dated 4 January 1988. The Château du Fayet is also the tenth stop on the themed village tour of Barraux.
Fort Barraux was built in 1597 on the hill of Barraux; the Piedmontese engineer Ercole Negro was commissioned to construct it. Fort Barraux is located in the immediate vicinity of Barraux. The Château de Maximy, built in 1703 in the classical style of the 17th to 18th centuries, is also part of the themed village tour of Barraux.
In the wider regional surroundings of Barraux is the Artothèque de Chambéry, a museum. The surroundings of Barraux also include the Chartreuse de Saint-Hugon, a ruin, and Les Charmettes, a historic site.
Landscape
The route to the Cascade du Furet begins in a wooded area, passes through a rural landscape on the return journey, and offers views of Fort Barraux and the Grésivaudan Valley. The Cascade du Furet is a small waterfall in a valley opposite Fort Barraux; it is hidden in the forest and freezes spectacularly in winter.
The Sommet de l'Alpette summit is located in the vicinity of Barraux. The Mont Granier mountain, the Sommet du Pinet summit, and the Brame Farine summit are also nearby.
Routes
From Grenoble, the route to the Cascade du Furet can be reached by train to Pontcharra-sur-Bréda–Allevard station and then by bus line 78 to the “La Corva” stop.
On the fourth stage of the GR®965 from Col de Marcieu to Chapareillan (Bellecombe), views of Mont Blanc and the Bauges Massif open up before arriving in Barraux. The Balcons de Chartreuse et Grésivaudan route heads towards Barraux; the route then continues via the hamlet of Fayet towards La Flachère.
