Culture

The V-shaped Monument national à la Résistance symbolizes the V for victory, while its broken section represents the pain and sacrifice caused by the war. The Church of Saint Francis de Sales in Thorens-Glières was rebuilt in Gothic style between 1898 and 1909 and preserves its 16th-century choir. It was listed as a historic monument in 1926.

The Chapelle de Pierre Taillée was built in 1668 by the inhabitants of the hamlet of Usillon to house a protective statue of the Virgin Mary. It is also called Notre Dame de la Pierre Taillée; this name refers to a nearby quarry.

The Verrerie royale d’Usillon was established in the Usillon Valley in 1750. It produced black glass for bottles, white glass for crystalware and window glass, and expanded its production between 1750 and 1789 to include crystal glass and luxury glassware. It closed in 1859.

History

The Château de Thorens combines architectural elements from the Middle Ages, the Baroque period and the 19th century. It was built on the former fort dating from 1060, which Count Gérold of Geneva had constructed. A visit to the Château de Thorens takes you through 950 years of history.

The Chapelle de Sales was built in 1672 on the site of the room where Saint Francis de Sales was born. The chapel contains a well-preserved Baroque altarpiece dating from 1677. It can be viewed from outside year-round through its glazed door; for safety reasons, it is not open to individual visitors.

Nature and winter

The Plateau des Glières lies at an altitude of 1,435 meters and was selected by the Allies as a drop zone during the Second World War. As a Nordic ski area, it offers 29 kilometers of cross-country ski trails between plateau and forest.

The Plateau des Glières can be reached via Thorens-Glières or Le Petit-Bornand, or via Glières-Val-de-Borne.
