In the centre of present-day Faverges lies the Thovey Gallo-Roman archaeological site. Faverges-Seythenex is located in the Parc Naturel Régional du massif des Bauges.

Culture and History

Excavations at the Thovey Gallo-Roman archaeological site uncovered a peristyle, a thermal complex and buildings dating from the 1st century BC to the 3rd century AD. The Donjon des Seigneurs de Faverges is a historic monument dating from the 13th century, located on the former border between the counties of Savoy and Geneva. In 1991, it was added to the supplementary list of French historic monuments.

A guided tour of the Donjon des Seigneurs de Faverges leads to a panoramic gallery with a 360-degree view over Faverges. The Musée Archéologique de Viuz-Faverges has three rooms displaying finds relating to human settlement in the canton of Faverges from the Neolithic period to the 18th century.

The Chemins du patrimoine urbain de Faverges pass through the town’s historic and industrial heritage at eight stops and can be explored independently in around one and a half hours. The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Faverges-Seythenex has a Romanesque choir dating from the 12th century and a crypt built over ancient remains. Le trésor de Casuaria is a virtual treasure hunt connected with the Thovey archaeological site and the Musée Archéologique de Viuz-Faverges.

Nature

The Muséum des Papillons has three rooms with more than 5,000 butterflies and insects from five continents. The room dedicated to European fauna highlights daytime butterflies from the Parc Naturel Régional du Massif des Bauges. The Grotte et Cascade de Seythenex offers a guided tour of the cave and two 150-metre-long zip lines over the waterfall.
