Culture and History

Haute-Bonne was fortified in the 13th century as a military stronghold of the lords of Faucigny. The original Church of Saint Nicholas on the promontory of Haute-Bonne probably dates from the same period as the construction of the castle in the 13th century. The Church of Saint Nicholas in Haute-Bonne is Romanesque in style and was restored in 2018; an inscription on the entrance portal dates a restoration to 1581.

Historical grain measures are preserved in the square by the church in Haute-Bonne. An oratory stands at the intersection of the roads to Juffly and Limargue. It was built around 1860 as a sign of gratitude and protection for the village after landslides spared Bonne in the Voirons.

The Bourg de Loëx is home to a 13th-century chapel and a 15th-century private château that formerly belonged to the Bouvier d’Yvoire family. The Chapelle de Loëx has a double stained-glass window with an outer and an inner pane.

Trails

The Maxime Ramp is a footpath to Haute-Bonne. The long-distance hiking trail Balcons du Léman, designated as a GR route, passes through Loëx and Bonne and reaches the ridge of the Voirons. The trail offers panoramic views of the Lake Geneva basin, the Vallée Verte, the Giffre and Aravis mountains, and Mont Blanc.

The secondary section of the Tour du Léman on the GR 5 runs from Bonne to Super-Saxel. As a GR 5 section, it is an easy 18.1-kilometre walk.

The Loëx walking loop is a family-friendly walk through fields and forests in the heart of an Environmentally Sensitive Natural Area. From the edge of the municipal area, it is marked with yellow-and-green hiking signs and directly connected to the Balcons du Léman GR trail. It is described as very accessible, without difficulties, and suitable for all-terrain strollers.

Landscape

The Menoge mountain stream runs through Bonne. The Environmentally Sensitive Natural Area of the Loëx Plateau includes agricultural and wooded areas, wetlands, meadows, dry grasslands, and forests. Preserved woodland areas on the Loëx Plateau are home to nationally protected species.

Nature

An information and awareness guide for schoolchildren covers the history of the plateau, the activities on offer, and its animal and plant life. In June 2021, four large-format information boards were installed as part of the Environmentally Sensitive Natural Area project—two in Arthaz and two in Bonne—as well as two reading panels about flora and fauna.
