Vercheny: Holiday Apartments and Houses

The ruins of the Château de Barry stand on a rocky promontory above the Drôme Valley and offer panoramic views of the Diois mountains. The route to the Château de Barry is a 12.81-kilometre circular hike.

Landscape

Vercheny-le-Haut lies in the AOC Clairette de Die wine-growing region. The village is situated at an altitude of 450 metres and offers extensive views of the Massif des 3 Bec and Mont Barry, which towers above the village.

Winegrowing

The Union des Jeunes Viticulteurs Récoltants was founded in 1961 by eight winegrowers who pooled their equipment, vineyards and labour. At the beginning, the shared vineyard area covered 8 hectares.

The cellar of the Union des Jeunes Viticulteurs Récoltants in Vercheny offers cellar tours with a projection and tasting or sale of Clairette and Crémant on Fridays at 2 p.m. in July and August, as well as by reservation for groups of 15 to 70 people. The Union des Jeunes Viticulteurs Récoltants also cultivates 60 hectares of vineyards on the very steep slopes of Vercheny, Aurel, Barsac and Saint-Sauveur-en-Diois, which are among the appellation’s finest terroirs.

Cave Monge Granon also offers cellar tours and tastings by prior reservation. The Maison de la Clairette welcomes visitors who would like to learn about winegrowing and the Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée.

Walks

In Vercheny-le-Haut, there is a 35-minute educational walk through the vineyards. The Sentier viticole on the terrace of Vercheny-le-Haut is an educational trail that explains the various stages of winegrowing and overlooks the Drôme.

History and culture

At the beginning of the 17th century, the Maison du Gap belonged to the noble De Neyrol family. Around 1750, the innkeeper Simon Lombard also began producing ceramics at the Maison du Gap, including glazed stove tiles and faience tiles; some of these can still be seen as reused building components beneath the roof.

The “Minerals and Fossils Exhibition” at the Fondation Ardouvin displays 1,000 mineral and fossil specimens collected and donated by a private enthusiast.
