Culture and history
The present-day Saint-Jacques church in Montaulieu was built in 1859. The village’s central chapel dates from the 14th century. It collapsed in the 1950s and was rebuilt around 1975 by Hamonet.
A former fortification wall around Montaulieu was already mentioned in the archives in the 15th century; no trace of it remains. The smaller corner tower of the former manor house belonging to the lord of the castle was incorporated into Mr Mériat’s sheepfold, which later became Montaulieu’s present-day town hall. At the southern end of Montaulieu, a truncated stone cylinder from the larger corner tower of a former manor house belonging to the lord of the castle has been preserved.
The Fête de la Soupe took place in Montaulieu on 15 February 2025 and on 28 February 2026.
In the wider surrounding region of Montaulieu are the La villasse - Maison du Buste d'Argent ruins, Chateau de Grignan castle, the Tour de l'Horloge church and the historic site of Abbaye de Bouchet.
Hiking trails and activities
The long-distance hike “Les six cols” connects six mountain passes and offers numerous viewpoints of the surrounding mountains. Along its route, the trail runs from Col des Lantons (726 m) towards Montaulieu, passing Rocher Crespin, which is referred to as Rocher Florin and is a climbing area for high-level climbing. Numerous hikes pass through the local lieux-dits of Montaulieu. The route at Col de la Vôte can also be ridden by mountain bike.
