Donzère: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Donzère combines cultural history, Roman traces, medieval fortifications and the landscape of the Rhône. The Musée des Amis du Vieux Donzère displays collections of objects from different periods; the museum also provides studies and books on local history.

Culture and History

One of the notable historic buildings is the Villa du Molard, a Roman-era wine production facility classified as a historic monument. The Église Saint-Philibert is also classified as a historic monument and is a Provençal Romanesque church built in the 12th century by monks from Tournus.

The Pont du Robinet de Donzère is one of the last surviving Seguin-type suspension wire bridges on the Rhône. The Porte de la Font is built into the 14th-century section of the town wall that belongs to the second fortification. A service is held every year in the Chapelle Combelonge in mid-August.

A tourist trail with 22 information panels leads through the picturesque streets of Donzère to the Tour de l'Horloge, the Romanesque church, preserved sections of the town wall and covered way, the fortified gates and the washhouse. The historic tour of Donzère is accessible free of charge every day all year round and without a guide; guided tours are available on request.

The Château Renaissance was built in the 16th century on behalf of Claude de Tournon, Bishop of Viviers and Prince of Donzère. Its features include a spiral staircase, mullioned windows, a French ceiling, a monumental Renaissance fireplace and 18th-century plaster stucco work. All year round, only the exterior façades of the Château Renaissance can be viewed from outside.

The Chapelle Combelonge dates from the beginning of the 17th century. The Moulin à vent de Beauvert was built in 1570 as a fortified tower during the Wars of Religion; in 2009, it was added to the heritage inventory.

Nature

The Défilé de Donzère is a narrow, deep corridor that the Rhône has carved through a powerful limestone massif.

Cuisine

The Chocolaterie A. Morin offers guided individual and group visits by prior arrangement. The shop sells Grand Cru chocolate bars, small and large Rochers, and chocolate spread. Morin is a family business in the orchards of Donzère that has been making chocolate and roasting coffee by traditional methods for four generations.

A ViaRhôna discovery route leads to Donzère, where visitors can discover the village, the chocolaterie and the Musée des Amis du Vieux Donzère.

Line D42 provides several daily connections in the Drôme département between Montélimar, Pierrelatte and Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux, continuing to Bollène in the Vaucluse département.
