Culture and History
The medieval lanes of the village are locally called “viols” in Châtillon-en-Diois. Since 3 July 2021, Châtillon-en-Diois has held the “Plus Beau Village de France” label. A heritage trail comprising 14 stations also leads through the narrow lanes of the medieval village. Its starting point is at the Champ de Foire, near the village washhouse.
The Église Saint-Nicolas is a seigneurial chapel built around 1200 at the foot of the rock face below the castle and served as the burial place of the nobles of Châtillon. Its Romanesque chancel vault is partly carved into the rock and consists of small limestone and tuff blocks.
The Église Saint-Julien was built outside the town walls between 1688 and 1705 according to plans by the Grenoble architect Dieulament, replacing the Église Saint-Nicolas, which was too small. On the outside, it has a wall bell tower; inside, a Baroque altar dating from 1751. The Tour de l'Horloge was built around 1725 above one of the two medieval gates that provided access to inner Châtillon-en-Diois.
The Hôtel de ville is a former hôtel particulier built at the end of the 16th century. Since 2008, its façades and roof have been protected as Monuments historiques because of their rare and high-quality painted decoration.
Wine and Trails
The Châtillon-en-Diois vineyard is one of the highest-altitude vineyards in France and extends between elevations of 300 and 700 m. The wine-growing area produces red, white and rosé wines with Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée status.
The Sentier des Cabanons is a discovery trail through the wine-growing area and to its Cabanons. The Sentier des Vignes begins at the Domaine de Maupas in Châtillon-en-Diois and leads through the wine-growing area characterised by Cabanons.
