Culture and History
In the mountainous landscape of the Haut-Diois, La Tune de la Varaime opens up at an altitude of 1,400 metres. Archaeological excavations have revealed several settlement phases spanning 6,000 years of history. The cave served as a sheepfold where large flocks were kept, especially sheep and goats.
La Tune de la Varaime is a cultural heritage site classified as a historic monument. Its walls bear hundreds of engravings that form one of the most significant collections of rock art in the Alps. The classification was established by decree dated 10 August 1990.

Nature
The municipality of Boulc is part of the 1,607.4-hectare Type 1 ZNIEFF natural area “Gorges des Gâts et Forêt du Sapet”. The Gorges des Gâts area combines limestone cliffs with a fast-flowing mountain stream lined with white alders. Warm, dry slopes face cool slopes with firs and spruces.
Larger stands of Phoenician juniper grow beneath the cliffs of the Gorges des Gâts. The cliffs also provide a habitat for peregrine falcons, eagle owls and golden eagles, as well as three species of bats.
Hiking and Cycling
The Traversée du Diois à VTT via Les Chemins du Soleil mountain-bike route includes a 6.5-kilometre section from Le Relais to Boulc. From Boulc, it also continues for 6 kilometres with 450 metres of ascent to the Col de Boulc.
The GR® 95 section from Piémard to Boulc passes through frequently eroded marl terrain, known as the “Roubines”, which can be slippery in wet weather. The GTV-VTT route reaches the hamlet of Soubreroche from the Boulc bridge via a very steep path.
Les balcons de Soubreroche follows a path built into the cliff face above the Gorges des Gâts to a hamlet on a small, suspended plateau and offers the cool shade of remarkably large beech trees along the way. The path features dry-stone walls for reinforcement, as well as sections that are paved and cut into the rock in places.
Places and Setting
Boulc, Bonneval and Ravel-et-Ferriers are now connected by the 800-metre-long Soubreroche tunnel. Ravel et Ferriers lies at an altitude of 1,120 metres and is considered the highest hamlet in the Diois.
The hamlet of Les Tatins preserves one of the finest farmsteads in the Diois. The Temple de Ravel in Ravel is a former neoclassical church; Ravel lies as a Protestant enclave at an altitude of 1,100 metres.
