Geographical location

To the east and south, the Isère forms the boundary between Beaumont-Monteux and the municipality of Châteauneuf-sur-Isère. A Roman road also ran through the municipal area; in Beaumont-Monteux, it is known as the Chemin de la Vie Magne and forms the boundary with the municipality of Pont-de-l’Isère.

History and culture

An old commandery existed in Le Perrou in Beaumont-Monteux from 1202. It was founded by the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem, who are also known as the Knights of Malta. The building of the commandery was later destroyed by flooding of the Isère; the Hospitallers subsequently withdrew to Saint-Romain-en-Gal.

The old village was also repeatedly affected by flooding. Floods in the 18th century destroyed large parts of Beaumont-Monteux. Most of those affected rebuilt their houses at the village’s present-day location. By 1806, the old village had completely disappeared; by then, a few houses and the parish church had survived the flooding of the Isère.

The Saint Vincent tradition in Beaumont-Monteux was established in 1886.

The route Geocaching: The Sights of Beaumont can be completed by bicycle or on foot and leads to remarkable points in the municipality of Beaumont-Monteux. It includes 14 hidden markers distributed throughout the countryside along the route.

The circular route “E-bike route: The Isère Valley” first passes through vineyards. It then follows secured paths along the waters of the Isère and Rhône rivers.

Nature

The Erik Borja Zen Garden was begun in 1973 and combines Japanese garden art with its creator’s Mediterranean origins and the distinctive characteristics of the Drôme. The garden offers visitors a successive route through the reception, meditation, tea, strolling and dragon gardens. It also allows individual, self-guided visits at any time.
