Culture and History

The Château-Gaillard fortress was built between 1345 and 1350 during the war between Savoy and Dauphiné. The archaeological remains in Château-Gaillard include protohistoric graves and circular enclosures, settlements and necropolises from antiquity, as well as a Merovingian and Carolingian village from the Early Middle Ages.

Château-Gaillard was probably an inhabited Roman fort and is recorded in a spelling from 1385 as “Castrum Gaillardi”. The tumulus graves of Château-Gaillard contained weapons and bronze ornaments.

In the vicinity of Château-Gaillard are Château des Allymes, a castle, Abbaye Notre Dame d'Ambronay, a monastery, Allymes Castle, a historical site, and Abbaye de Chassagne, also a historical site.

Circular Route

The “De Château-Gaillard à Priay” circular route starts at the car park by the church of Château-Gaillard, is 15 kilometres long, very easy, and signposted with yellow PR markings.
