Culture and local history
The parish church of Saint-Laurent was first mentioned in 1091. Large parts of the present building date from later periods; extensive work was carried out in 1841 and 1846 as part of the Sardinian restoration. The church contains numerous remarkable paintings dated 1647 and 1667. These include an oil painting executed in 1647 by Jacques Viany from Vence, depicting the deacons Saint-Laurent, Etienne and Vincent.
The Maison à arcades on the village square dates from the 15th century, was restored in the 19th century and completely rendered. Three oratories are still visible in the village: Saint-Jean, Sainte Claire and the Vierge Marie. The stone-carved holy water font depicts a face and dates from the 12th or 13th century.
The communal bread oven was donated in 1932 by twelve residents of the municipality and has since been in operation both for the needs of the residents and for successive baker-grocers. Revest-les-Roches also has a processional float dating from the late 19th century.
Nature, hiking and events
Revest-les-Roches is located in the ZNIEFF “Vallée de l'Esteron oriental d'Aiglun à Gilette”, a type 2 ecological inventory area of ecological, faunal and floristic interest. The Chêne du Villar is over 800 years old, was designated an “Arbre Remarquable” by the A.B.R.E.S. association in 2012, and serves as the starting point for the Verticale Haut Vial, organised annually by the municipality and its associations.
The hiking route to Mont Vial passes the Balme du Vial cave on the northern approach. The Verticale Haut-Vial is a trail competition starting in the village of Revest-les-Roches. As part of the Verticale Haut Vial, children aged 3 to 12 can take part in a free obstacle course through the village. The Verticale Haut Vial covers a total of 10 km, including a 5 km climb with 900 m of positive elevation gain to the highest point of Mont Vial at 1,550 m.
