Culture and history
The Abbey of the Holy Trinity was founded at the end of the 11th century. Mauléon Castle overlooks the Ouin Valley and offers an exceptional panoramic view. In the Saint-Jouin district, the bell tower reflects a Romanesque tradition.
The former tannery in Mauléon also bears witness to the town’s once highly significant leather industry. The Mont-Gaillard monument offers another viewpoint overlooking Mauléon.
Trails and landscape
Mauléon offers 90 kilometres of rural trails open to hikers. In addition, four signposted hiking loops are available. In the Mont Gaillard and Ouin Valley area, there is the signposted trail “The fortified town and its landscape heritage”.
The area also offers the 2.8-kilometre permanent orienteering course “From Saint-Jouin to the fortified town”, with ten checkpoints. The Rochers gravés des Vaulx and the Mont Gaillard and Ouin Valley area are designated as Espaces Naturels Sensibles des Deux-Sèvres département.
Cycling route
The Véloroute V93 connects Bressuire, Nueil-les-Aubiers and Mauléon with the Sèvre Nantaise Valley and onward to Nantes, the banks of the Loire and Saint-Nazaire.
Events and historical heritage
The Médiévales de Mauléon take place every two years. The Vendredis du Patrimoine are themed guided walks held every summer in Mauléon.
In Saint-Aubin-de-Baubigné, the Rochers gravés des Vaulx site comprises several dozen rocks protected as historic monuments, bearing engravings of human figures, animals and various symbols from the Bronze Age, dating from 2200 to 800 BC.
