Culture
The Eglise paroissiale Saint-Jacques is a Gothic church consecrated in 1227. Inside, it features contemporary frescoes by the painter Robert Mantienne.
The Prieuré Fontevriste is a former priory dating from the 12th century and occasionally served as a retreat for Marguerite d’Angoulême.
The Maison du Patrimoine contains reconstructions of historic regional interiors and presents seasonal artistic and cultural exhibitions. It also houses the permanent exhibition “Les mégalithes en Ruffécois”, which is free to visit.
The historic building “Maison du 15e siècle, dite Logis de Marguerite de Valois” is located in Tusson. The Logis was built in several construction phases during the 16th century. The first building rests on an older wall, which is probably a fragment of the fortifications constructed at the end of the 14th century. According to Brantôme, it was built to accommodate Marguerite d’Angoulême and her entourage.
The Couvent des Hommes is owned by the municipality and freely accessible.
Landscape
Approximately 1 km east of Tusson, a series of five megalithic monuments runs along a ridge oriented roughly from north to south, overlooking the area as far as Charente Limousine.
The Sentier du Prieuré runs through woodland.
Exploring the Village
The Tumulus du Vieux Breuil is signposted from the village; the approximately 1 km access route begins at the parish church. Admission is free, and there is an information board on site.
The Tumulus du Petit Dognon was recently developed by the historic monuments service of Nouvelle-Aquitaine and can be accessed via a municipal road 400 m north of the Tumulus du Vieux Breuil.
The tourist discovery trail through Tusson is signposted and begins to the left of the church on Rue du Maussant. Guided tours of the village of Tusson are available by telephone reservation.
Since 2009, Atelier Mains d’Argile has offered hand-thrown utility pottery and decorative stoneware; the workshop behind the shop can be viewed from the exhibition room.
