Several eras and landscapes come together in Saint-Maurice-de-Tavernole. The Saint Maurice de Tavernole chapel was rebuilt in the 17th century on the site of a 12th-century church destroyed during the Wars of Religion. The Church of Saint-Maurice features contemporary stained-glass windows and wall frescoes. After suffering severe damage in the storm of 29 December 1999, the present Church of Saint-Maurice was restored and reopened for worship.
Culture and History
The small Church of Saint-Maurice stands on a small hill and overlooks a landscape stretching far into the distance. The circular route from Jonzac to Meux also passes through Saint-Maurice-de-Tavernole, by the wall and the double main gate of a manor house.
The Église Saint-Martin de Petit-Niort is a historic site in the wider regional area around Saint-Maurice-de-Tavernole. The ruins of the Abbaye de la Frenade are also located in the wider regional area. The Château Royal de Cognac is a château there, the Château de Jarnac is a historic site, and the Parc François-Ier is a park.
