Nature
After quarrying ended, the former quarries of Crazannes were transformed into jungle-like gorges. They are located within an Espace Naturel Sensible belonging to the Charente-Maritime département. The département also wanted to establish a Refuge LPO Collectivités on the La Pierre de Crazannes site.
Paths through the Quarries
The “Parcours des carriers” is a guided, 650-metre-long route through the former quarries of Crazannes.
The “P'tit parcours de Genny” is a 600-metre-long route featuring a staged presentation. It explains the origins of the white stone, the methods used to quarry it, and the animal and plant life found there.
The FFRandonnée list for Cœur de Saintonge also includes a 10.5-kilometre hiking route from Crazannes to Port-d'Envaux.
Culture and History
The Château de Crazannes is nicknamed “Château du Chat Botté”. The reason is Jules Gouffier, Count of Caravaz, who inspired Charles Perrault to create the Marquis de Carabas and the master of Puss in Boots.
The Château de Crazannes is partly classified as a “Monument historique” and partly registered as one.
The Sainte-Madeleine Church is a 12th-century building. Its Romanesque chevet is considered characteristic of the Saintonge; at the same time, the church stands above the source of the Freussin.
Crazannes stone was used to build transport routes and monuments such as the Germanicus Arch in Saintes.
Crazannes stone was exported worldwide.
