Landscape and Trails
The 9.5-kilometre circular trail “Circuit des châteaux” lies entirely within the municipality of Clérac. The Voie verte is a 35-kilometre route for pedestrians, cyclists, inline skaters and horse riders. The 17-kilometre circular trail “Château et vallées” connects Clérac with Montguyon and uses part of the Voie verte between Orignolles and Clérac.
Clay extraction has shaped the landscape of Clérac, among other things through the creation of the “Blue Lakes”. The Promenade de la Lune offers a horse stop as well as a parking area for motorhomes with electricity and a water point.
History and Culture
The Château de Caillères was formerly the seat of the lordship of Clérac; it has been listed as a historic monument since 1949. The Musée des métiers et traditions populaires was founded by René Soulard, a resident of Clérac and a passionate collector of old tools.
The Church of Saint-Vivien was built in the 11th century and is attributed to Benedictine monks. Its bell has been in use since its baptism in 1636 and is listed in the inventory of movable cultural heritage.
Industrial History
Clérac’s industrial heritage includes the Berteau limeworks, a brickworks and a brick kiln.
