Lucheux: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Beffroi de porte de Lucheux is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Belfries of Belgium and France”, which was inscribed in 2005. The belfry of Lucheux was probably built on an earlier town gate after the town was granted its charter of municipal liberties in 1201.

Culture and History

The Château de Lucheux was built in 1120 by Hugues de Campdavaine, Count of Saint-Pol. The surviving parts include a 35-metre-high keep, defensive towers and two fortified gates. By a decree dated 30 March 1965, the surviving parts of the Château de Lucheux – the surrounding wall and all the buildings within it – were protected as historic monuments.

The Église Saint-Léger also preserves remarkable details: its choir features figurative capitals depicting animals and foliage.

The Chapelle Saint-Léger is located 1.5 kilometres from the village in the forest. Inside the chapel, a fresco depicts the saint’s martyrdom. Another special feature is the Arbre aux épousailles: it consists of two lime trees, approximately 300 years old, that have grown together into a single trunk and form an opening in the middle.

Nature

The landscapes of Lucheux and the Grouche Valley are considered emblematic of the Ponthieu, Authie and Doullennais landscape unit. Lucheux is characterised by a heavily wooded setting around the upper Grouche valley.

The Allée royale runs through the forest, a 4-kilometre-long historic path hidden in the woods that once led through the royal domain of Lucheux.

The forests in the Lucheux area are included in type 1 ZNIEFF areas. The wooded slopes in the Lucheux area are recognised under Natura 2000 as Sites of Community Importance for habitats.

Visitor Information

The interior of the Beffroi de Lucheux can only be visited as part of guided tours for small groups, with prior reservation. The Château de Lucheux is privately owned and closed to the public.
