Culture and History
The former Carmichael Frères et Cie factory on Rue de l’Usine is a testament to Ailly-sur-Somme’s industrial heritage. It was initially a linen factory, was gradually converted into a jute spinning and weaving mill, and ceased operations in 1983.
The church of Ailly-sur-Somme, dedicated to Saint Martin, was rebuilt after the Second World War, following the destruction of the former church during the fighting in 1940. The 20.50-metre-high bell tower of the rebuilt church has the profile of a ship’s sail.
Historical traces can also be found along the Somme Canal: Work on Lock No. 19 in Ailly-sur-Somme was carried out between 1825 and 1827. Following its renovation in 2011, the lock keeper’s house became a visitor centre for the Maison du Tourisme Nièvre & Somme. The renovated building also serves as a rest stop on the Véloroute Vallée de Somme.
By the Water
The canoe route from Ailly-sur-Somme to Picquigny is approximately 5.6 km long and takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. The Boucle d’Ailly-sur-Somme is a canoe and kayak loop. On this loop, the boat has to be carried for a few metres before re-entering the water downstream of the weir on the right bank of the Vieille Somme.
Getting Around
The GR 800 runs mostly along the towpath and connects viewpoints with lock keeper’s houses in the Somme Valley. As a long-distance hiking trail, it follows the Somme from its source in Fonsomme in the Aisne department to the sea in the Bay of Somme.
