Culture and history

The chapter house of the abbey was built between 1160 and 1170 and remains as one of the surviving relics of the Abbey of Saint-Jean-aux-Bois. The Church of Saint-Jean also contains a figurative stained-glass window depicting the Passion and Resurrection of Christ. The village is also characterised by a fortified gateway with two towers.

The Grand Orgue de Saint-Jean was installed in spring 2015. It combines traditional organ building with digital technology and is considered a first in France. Another special feature is the oak Le Chêne Saint-Jean, which is believed to be 750 years old.

Nature

The Arboretum de Saint-Jean-aux-Bois covers 1.4 hectares. It features sensory stations for experiencing fir scents, identifying tree species and animal tracks, as well as a wooden xylophone for perceiving different wood sounds.

The arboretum includes a botanical garden designed to be accessible to people with visual impairments and wheelchair users. The information boards include translations in Braille.

Routes

The 17-kilometre cycle route from Compiègne to Pierrefonds passes through Saint-Jean-aux-Bois. The hiking trail La Tête Saint-Jean begins at Carrefour Saint-Nicolas-de-Courson in Saint-Jean-aux-Bois.
