The Matz River runs through Roye-sur-Matz and has four sources. One of the Matz’s sources is located in the La Babillarde municipal park; Roye-sur-Matz also has three marshland areas.
The Grand Marais has been developed as a recreational area. The Circuit des Bois de Roye circular trail begins in Roye-sur-Matz at the car park opposite the Château des Granges. It crosses the upper Matz Valley and passes through diverse natural areas with damp valley floors and sandy hills. The banks of the Matz are open for walks between Canny-sur-Matz and Laberlière.
Culture and History
In the 12th century, the Château des Granges served as a monastic tithe barn for storing tithe payments from the areas of Roye-sur-Matz and Laberlière. In the Middle Ages, specifically from 1297, until the middle of the 17th century, specifically until 1656, the Ferme des Granges was under the authority of Saint-Corneille Abbey. Subsequently, the Ferme des Granges remained under the authority of Val-de-Grâce Abbey until the French Revolution.
The Church of Saint Martin was built in two construction phases between 1150 and 1180. After the fighting in 1918, which had almost completely destroyed the Church of Saint Martin, it was restored with the utmost care.
The buildings of the former Roye-sur-Matz railway station are still preserved. The former railway crossing keeper’s house is also still preserved.
