La Fère showcases its history through clearly dated buildings and collections. The Church of Saint-Montain was classified as a historic monument by decree of 7 January 1921. La Fère became a fortified town after the Romans established a military post there during the conquest of Gaul.

History

The old quarter in the Drouot district was built between 1720 and 1732. The new quarter was established in 1767 to accommodate the first French artillery school, founded by Louis XV in 1719. The façades and roofs of the old and new quarters of the Drouot district were protected as historic monuments by decree of 19 January 1994.

Culture

The Musée Jeanne d’Aboville houses an art collection assembled in the 19th century, with works from Flemish, Dutch, French and Italian schools. It also includes a local archaeology department covering the period from prehistory to the Merovingian era, as well as a significant Gallo-Roman collection containing some rare pieces. The Parc de la Mairie can be accessed through the entrance of the Musée Jeanne d’Aboville on Rue du Général de Gaulle.

The Château de La Fère was built for Marie of Luxembourg and has belonged to the Crown’s estates since 1596. The surviving wing of the Château de La Fère is an example of Renaissance architecture in brick and natural stone in Picardy.

Nature

The La Fère arboretum showcases a wide variety of trees, including wild service tree, alder, catalpa, pin oak, giant sequoia and Japanese pagoda tree.

Things to Do

The 43-kilometre cycling route “L’écrivain qui a jeté l’ancre” can be ridden in both directions between Chiry-Ourscamp and La Fère. It follows the EuroVelo 3 route and runs along the Canal de Saint-Quentin and the Canal latéral à l’Oise. La Fère railway station is an SNCF access point and is located 2 kilometres from the Ribemont–Tergnier stage of La Scandibérique.
