Chivres-Val: Holiday apartments and houses
Chivres-Val combines an impressive history of churches and fortifications with trails, tours and nature activities around Fort de Condé. The church in Chivres-Val has a nave and side aisles dating from the 12th century, a southern chapel from the 13th century and a bell tower from the 16th century.
Culture and history
The church was largely destroyed during the First World War and subsequently rebuilt true to the original. By decree of 15 October 1919, it was classified as a monument historique.
Fort de Condé was built between 1877 and 1882. It is a historic monument and part of the French defence system conceived by General Séré de Rivières after the defeat of 1870. Both guided and self-guided tours are available for visitors.
Trails around the fort
The 1.2 km discovery trail around Fort de Condé is accessible to people with motor, visual, auditory and cognitive disabilities. The interpretation trail “Around Fort de Condé” allows visitors to explore the grounds of Fort de Condé and offers panoramic views of the Aisne and Vesle valleys. It is also an easy 1.2 km hiking loop, which takes about 25 minutes.
The Fort de Condé also offers playful ways to explore the site. “Fort de Condé, mission impossible” is a 45-minute game in which participants try to save the fort. In “Explosive Investigation”, an investigator’s bag is provided, and participants are tasked with identifying a suspected saboteur.
Nature and activities
The Arboretum du fort de Condé includes a Ginkgo biloba and a collection of American trees. It also features a nature puzzle: Corylus helps visitors find the fruit of the mysterious tree among the 40 recorded tree species.
The grounds of the Arboretum du fort de Condé have circular trails for hiking, horse riding and mountain biking. Fort de Condé also features “Les Filets des Sentinelles”, a 500 m² net adventure course. The site also has a signposted trail, free parking and toilets.
Practical information
Access to Fort de Condé is via the municipality of Chivres-Val. A route via the road from Condé-sur-Aisne suggested by some navigation devices is not passable by car. The fort has an access road for large vehicles connected to the RD423.
