In Saint-Hilaire, Vendée Vitrail offers a playful and interactive introduction to stained glass and shows the individual steps involved in making a church window. It was classified as a Monument historique in 2024 and was originally installed in Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.

History
The Église Saint-Pierre in Mortagne-sur-Sèvre is a church built between 1050 and 1200 in the Poitevin Romanesque style and has been classified as a Monument historique since 1906. The Chapelle Saint-Léger, built in 1270, contains a tomb classified as a Monument historique, belonging to Mabille de Maulévrier, as well as 13th-century frescoes.
The Château de Mortagne includes a Tour du Trésor built in the 12th century and a Tour à éperon constructed towards the end of the 16th century. The privately owned “Site médiéval du Château” offers visits to the medieval town walls, the Tour à éperon, the manor house and the Tour du Trésor exclusively by reservation. The Moulin de Gazeau is a fulling mill dating from 1650; its grounds include a canoeing centre.
The historic centre of Mortagne-sur-Sèvre can be explored via its cobbled lanes and architectural heritage.
Nature
The Jardins de la Cure offer views over the Sèvre Nantaise valley. The gardens, restored in 2012, include Clisson-style stairs, basins and fountains, as well as a vegetable garden and an insect hotel. The Jardins de la Cure also host exhibitions, performances and concerts.
The railway line starting at Mortagne-sur-Sèvre station reaches the Sèvre Nantaise valley and crosses the river at the Barbin Viaduct.
Things to Do
The Chemin de Fer de la Vendée offers a 22-kilometre round trip from Mortagne-sur-Sèvre to Les Herbiers along a scenic route with viaducts. Lunches and dinners are served on the “Voitures des Grands Express” restaurant train departing from Mortagne-sur-Sèvre station; the journeys are diesel-powered and require a reservation, subject to availability.
The Circuit de Grenon is a moderately challenging 13.6-kilometre route for walkers and mountain bikers. It takes around three hours and starts at the Place de la Roseraie in Mortagne-sur-Sèvre. The Fleuriais site in Mortagne-sur-Sèvre is designated as a climbing area.
A cycle path follows the Sèvre Nantaise through Mortagne-sur-Sèvre and is signposted in both directions with Vendée-Vélo signs, as well as with road markings in some sections. The La Vélidéale cycle route also passes through Mortagne-sur-Sèvre.
