Culture and History
The former Saint-Christophe church in Mesnard-La-Barotière preserves 13th-century murals. They were discovered by chance in the choir in 1950.
In October 2006, the Vendée departmental council installed a museographic display entitled “A l’écoute des images, Mille ans de fresques et de peintures murales en Vendée” in the former Saint-Christophe church, as well as an audio system explaining the murals in the choir.
The Vieux Château chapel was entered in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments by order of 16 March 1987. It cannot currently be visited because it is located on private property.
Water and Nature
Lac de La Tricherie is a 17-hectare body of water offering opportunities for swimming, pedal boating and fishing. On its eastern shore, visitors can observe numerous birds among the oak trees.
Bois du Défend is a nature area with a great diversity of animal and plant species. Walking paths have been laid out in the forest. Some local paths, including paths in Bois du Défend, are accessible to bicycles, pushchairs and wheelchairs.
Activities
At its site at 9, La Tricherie, 85500 Mesnard-la-Barotière, Tépacap Vendée offers the Accrosplash floating course and tree climbing. Its Mesnard-la-Barotière site also features tree climbing and the Accrosplash inflatable floating course.
Tépacap Vendée offers the “Jeu de piste – Sac à dos”, an activity that allows visitors to rediscover La Tricherie independently through orienteering and challenges in nature.
The “Le Secret de Perrine” activity booklet is available for €5 in shops in Mesnard-la-Barotière and at the Les Herbiers tourist office.
