The Vieux Château in La Mothe-Achard was built in 1773 on the site of an earlier castle that had been fortified in the 11th and 12th centuries.
The present-day market halls are a Baltard-style pavilion built in 1924 according to plans by the architect Joseph Libaudière. Their façade bears the coat of arms and motto of the former commune of La Mothe-Achard: “Ex Virtute Nobilitas”. The market halls have stood in the town’s central square since the Middle Ages.
The Church of Saint-Jacques survived the fire of 1794 during the Vendée Wars and was used at that time as an ammunition depot and stable.
