L'Orbrie: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Logis La Pavée houses the panoramic wallpapers “L’Eldorado”. Hehrmann and Zipélius created them in 1849; they comprise 24 strips, are considered a unique example in the Vendée and even in France, and are listed as an object protected under the Monuments historiques designation.

Nature

The Vendée borders around two-thirds of the municipality of L'Orbrie. The 932-hectare area comprises 505 hectares of forest and woodland, most of which is located in the southern section of the Vouvant-Mervent state forest.

The Parc de la Grotte is a five-hectare departmental park with shaded paths and a small artificial grotto. Ginkgo, magnolia, maritime pine, boxwood and yew trees grow there. The shaded picnic area has toilets and access to hiking trails.

The La Fontaine à l’Ermite hike leads through the Mervent-Vouvant forest, along the lake and the Vendée; there are steep sections by the river. The trail also runs along a rocky section beside the Vendée. A short climb is required there, and the rocks can be very slippery in wet weather. The route starts at the Fontaine à l’Ermite car park roundabout via Allée de la Balingue in L'Orbrie.

Culture

Restored sections of the La Pavée wallpapers can be viewed in the Clod’Aria municipal library in L'Orbrie. The Church of Saint Vincent contains a remarkable 19th-century wooden confessional, which has been listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments since 1990.

Historically, L'Orbrie became a wine-growing village and adopted Saint Vincent as its patron saint.

Hiking

The Puy Chabot circular hike starts in L'Orbrie, is 8.2 kilometres long and has a moderate difficulty level. Near Sauvaget, the route runs along the Vendée, crosses a footbridge and leads through Puy Chabot and the Bois aux Fraises into the woodland.

The Sauvaget hiking route starts at the Salle polyvalente in L'Orbrie, runs along the Vendée near Sauvaget and is marked in yellow with the number 2. It is 7 kilometres long and classified as moderately difficult.

The Le Barrage circular hike starts in L'Orbrie, is 15 kilometres long and has a high difficulty level. It follows the Vendée, passes through the forest and along the shores of Lac de Mervent. The route reaches a viewpoint at the Mervent dam and passes the remarkable Chêne à l’Ermite tree.

Six circular trails make it possible to explore the area from L'Orbrie, both across the plain and on the forest side.

Cycling and horse riding

Mountain bike circuit no. 6, La Balingue, starts at the Fontaine à l’Ermite roundabout in L'Orbrie and has 197 metres of elevation gain. The difficult mountain bike circuit no. 13, Saint-Michel-le-Cloucq, connects the Mervent forest massif with Fontenay-le-Comte and passes through L'Orbrie and Saint-Michel-le-Cloucq.

The difficult Moulin Neuf horse-riding trail is 10 kilometres long and starts at a shelter near La Balingue.
