Culture and History
The Église Saint-Michel is protected as a historic monument; it was registered by decree dated 20 June 1952. It was built in the 12th century from local sandstone, Roussard sandstone, Grison stone, and shell limestone. The wood paneling above the nave features a calendar with 366 saints, depicted either in full figure or as busts. The building was restored in the 1990s and retained its semicircular shape.
Until the end of the 19th century, Saint-Michel-de-Chavaignes had craft traditions involving hemp weaving and the production of canvas.
The cultural tour leads to the tomb of Hélène Bertaux in the cemetery, where she was buried on 20 April 1909. The annual “Mains d’Art” event honors female artists, among other ways through the Prix Hélène Bertaux, and is dedicated to various art forms. Trails and Landscape
The “Un chemin, une école” circular trail is classified as an easy hike lasting approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. It leads across the slopes of the Vallon de la Tortue and often follows quiet country lanes. The trail begins in front of the École Jacques Yves Cousteau and is marked with yellow signs overlaid by a red diamond.
