Saint-Corneille: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Church of Saint-Corneille is documented as having existed as early as the 11th century. It was enlarged around 1860, when its present-day bell tower was also built. Its stained-glass windows depict the life of Pope Cornelius and refer to La Perrigne Abbey and Touvoie Castle.

Culture and History

An abbey for Augustinian nuns existed in La Perrigne from around 1240 to 1790; the abbess's house has survived to this day. In the 1920s, the La Perrigne farm was transformed into the “Jardin d’Aviculture de la Sarthe” and a model farm.

Touvoie lies on the banks of the Vive Parence and was a barony of the bishops of Le Mans, whose jurisdiction extended over 30 parishes. At Touvoie Castle, the poet Pierre de Ronsard received the tonsure from Bishop René du Bellay. Around 1540, Pierre Belon established one of France's first botanical gardens there.

During the fighting on 12 January 1871, French troops resisted the Prussian advance in Touvoie on the banks of the Vive Parence. Hyre is mentioned in the local history of Saint-Corneille as the site of a skirmish on 12 January 1871.

Local Highlights

Le p'tit chèvre Sarthois produces organic goat cheese in Saint-Corneille and is an educational farm. Le Jardin d'un rêve makes simple hydrosols and blends, flavoured vinegars, syrup, herbs, infusions and plant-based preserves.

From May to September, Le Jardin d'un rêve offers workshops from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on plant gathering, steam distillation and a playfully designed garden visit.

Nature

The Jardin de la Fontaine du Pâtis comprises four landscaped ponds. More than 4,600 perennials grow there; it also includes a permaculture vegetable garden.
