In La Bruère-sur-Loir, the Église paroissiale Saint-Martin was built in three major phases: in the Early Middle Ages, there was an initial structure that was partially destroyed; in the High Middle Ages, the timber-framed or wood-clad nave followed; and during the First Renaissance, the monumental choir was added. The 16th-century extension comprised a two-bay choir, polygonal apses and two side chapels forming a transept.
Culture and history
The Église paroissiale Saint-Martin has been protected as a historic monument since 11 December 1912. Today, it houses eight stained-glass windows depicting scenes from the life and Passion of Christ, the life of the Virgin Mary and the preaching of Saint John the Baptist.
The first known mention of the Château du Grand-Perray dates from 1422. The Château de la Maison Rouge is thought to have been built at the end of the Middle Ages on land belonging to the Grand-Perray. The former Château de la Maison Rouge stood north of a quadrangular courtyard flanked by corner towers; north of the residential building, a large garden extended as far as the stream. A landscaped park was later created, incorporating the freestanding towers surrounded by vegetation.
The painting “Christ en croix avec sainte Marie-Madeleine” probably dates from an 18th-century local painter and is a copy of one of the numerous depictions of Christ’s Crucifixion by Charles Le Brun. The painting “Enfant Jésus retrouvé dans le Temple” is a faithful copy of a composition by Philippe de Champaigne, painted in 1663 for the church of the Paris Charterhouse. The statue of Saint John the Baptist was probably created by a sculptor from Le Mans active in the second half of the 17th century. It is made of red terracotta and depicts the saint with a lamb.
