Culture and History
The Église Saint-Philibert dates back to the 11th century. In the 1840s and 1850s, it was extended with two chapels and two new windows; the nave was also lengthened towards the west.
Le Logis de Fontenay is a 14th- and 15th-century seigneurial manor house. The main building dates from the early 14th century and was extended in the 15th century. The buildings enclosing the courtyard, including the dovecote, the retaining walls and the courtyard floor, are partly protected as historic monuments. An old grain mill has also been preserved on the site; it once used the flow of the Vègre to drive its millstone. Archaeological investigations there uncovered the foundations of a round tower that was arranged symmetrically opposite the dovecote.
At the Grand Villiers estate, the Chapelle Saint Roch was restored inside and out by its current owner. In the past, it welcomed processions from the neighbouring parishes during the Rogation Days. The former priory building, attached to the rear of the church, dates from the 15th century and is now used as a residence. The Château du Logis served as a natural backdrop for filming the movie “Le Masque de fer”.
An octagonal chimney, visible from the rue du Lavoir and the rue des Lavandières, is considered the only one of its kind listed in France. For groups, 1.5-hour educational visits and, on request, 1.5-hour guided tours are offered.
Hiking and Cycling
The “Boucle autour de Fontenay-sur-Vègre” hike begins in the village square and passes, among other places, the washhouse and Le Logis. During this hike, there is an opportunity to picnic at the municipal pond. Hiking options in the Vallée de la Sarthe also include circular routes between Poillé-sur-Vègre and Fontenay-sur-Vègre.
The 15-kilometre “Boucle Médiévale” cycling route leads to the remarkable village of Fontenay-sur-Vègre as one of its points of interest.
Townscape and Traditions
A terracotta statue at the washhouse in Fontenay-sur-Vègre commemorates the legend of Saint-Philibert and was restored in 1987. The washhouse is fed by spring water which, according to legend, is said to have gushed forth beneath Saint-Philibert’s horse’s hoof.
