Chahaignes is located in the centre of the Loir Valley wine-growing region, which has the protected designations of origin AOC Jasnières and Coteaux du Loir. Those choosing Chahaignes as a holiday destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
Culture
The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1705 and rebuilt in 1733. It contains 18th-century terracotta altarpieces, which have been classified as historic monuments since 1907. There is also a Hosannière cross in the church cemetery. Admission to the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Chahaignes is free.
The Menhir de Gobianne has been listed as a Monument historique since 8 February 1984.
The Château de Bénéhard was built on the site of an older fortress in the 16th century and expanded in the 17th century. Several caves carved into Turonian tuff are located near the château. A restored Roman-type press, probably dating from the 15th century, stands in a large ventilated cave at the Château de Bénéhard.
The Château de la Jaille dates from the 16th century and is partially listed as a Monument historique. Its park was laid out in the Mediterranean style around 1920. At the beginning of June, the park is open to visitors during the Journées des jardins.
Wine and Trails
Chahaignes has hiking, cycling and horse-riding trails between vineyards and forest. The Forêt de Bercé can be accessed from Chahaignes.
The “Chahaignes – Entre caves et coteaux” PR hiking trail is 9.3 kilometres long. The “Entre caves et coteaux” PR trail passes a winegrower’s estate where visits are possible.
