Bonnétable: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Jardin Potager de Bonnétable was created in 1885 on the grounds of the Château de Bonnétable by the Bühler brothers. Today, it covers 13,000 m² and includes a conservation garden for fruit varieties, beds featuring old varieties, a Mediterranean garden, a herb garden, ponds and greenhouses.

Nature

The grounds of the Château de Bonnétable include two ponds, irregularly winding avenues, several rustic-style garden structures and the ruins of the former Marteau mill. The Jardin Potager de Bonnétable is classified as a “Refuge” by the Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux and has nesting boxes for birds, insect hotels and shelters for bats. Binoculars can be borrowed on site to observe the wildlife.

The Parc public de Bonnétable is crossed by the Tripoulin and offers paths, preserved washhouses and opportunities to observe the flora and fauna. There is a children’s playground at the entrance. Fishing is possible in the ponds of the Parc public de Bonnétable.

Culture

The Église Saint-Sulpice was founded by Yves de Bellesme, the Lord of Bonnétable. It has a wooden organ dating from 1850 as well as stained-glass windows created by Fialeix.

The Catherine-Paysan Museum displays a classroom from an earlier period, the former living quarters with a kitchen and bedrooms, as well as exhibitions about the life and work of Catherine Paysan. The Maison d'école natale de l'écrivain Catherine Paysan is one of only two houses in France that are both a former school and a writer’s house.

Paths and Circular Walks

“Côté chemin, côté jardin” is an 18 km-long, moderately difficult walking route of the Sentier de Promenade et de Randonnée type in Bonnétable; the stated duration is three hours. The Bonnétable historical tour is an easy two-hour walk and is available on request from the tourist office.

Visiting

Individual visitors can visit the Jardin Potager de Bonnétable free of charge during the tourist office’s opening hours. For groups, guided tours are available by prior registration, and educational workshops are offered for school classes.

Transvap offers a 17 km-long train journey through the rural landscape and the bocage. During the summer season, the trains run regularly and travel as far as Bonnétable.
