Valognes: Holiday apartments and houses

Valognes showcases Roman remains, medieval craftsmanship and Baroque gardens. The Roman baths of Alauna were built in the 1st century AD; their masonry has been preserved up to a height of around 12 metres. The visible baths are freely accessible at no charge.

Culture

From the Parc des Cordeliers, Valognes town centre and the SNCF railway station can be reached on foot in less than 10 minutes.

The Jardin Anne Heinis is laid out on two successive terraces beside the Merderet. It includes a round pool with a central fountain, a willow notable for its volume and a children’s playground. The restored gardens of the Hôtel de Beaumont are French Baroque gardens.

History

The Chapelle de la Victoire stands on the foundations of a large ancient building that stood above Alauna’s former forum. The Church of Notre-Dame d’Alleaume is located on the site of the ancient city of Alauna and houses a semicircular Baroque altarpiece with polychrome terracotta figures.

The choir of Saint-Malo Church was rebuilt in the 15th century. The nave was completely rebuilt in a modern architectural style after the bombings of 1944. The Hôtel de Grandval-Caligny has a French Baroque garden.

Rue du Grand-Moulin is lined with craftsmen’s houses dating from the 15th to the 17th century, situated along the Merderet. The Great Mill of Valognes still has a system of weirs and channels.

Valognes is considered one of the gateways to the Marais du Cotentin Regional Nature Park.
