Culture and history

The Église priorale Saint-Fromond and the grounds of its former cemetery were registered as a historic monument by decree of 23 November 2004. What remains of it is a bay with side aisles, a transept and a choir with a semicircular apse. The Château de la Rivière was built around 1090 by Odon de Conteville, William the Conqueror’s half-brother, to protect the east of the Vire. It is a nesting site for white storks. The Château de la Rivière and the surrounding fields are private property; the sites should be respected when observing the white storks.

Nature

The Canal de Vire et Taute is 11.5 km long and connects the Vire and Taute rivers. Along the canal, information boards provide information about its history, the environment, the marshlands and the white storks.

The towpath along the Canal de Vire et Taute can be reached from the D974 when coming from Saint-Jean-de-Daye towards Carentan: at the third roundabout, turn left and initially follow the signs for “Maison des Ormes”, then “Port des Planques”.

Hiking

The “Entre haut et bas-pays” hiking loop in Saint-Fromond is 11 km long. The “Entre haut et bas pays – Saint-Fromond” hiking loop begins in the village market square or at the abbey car park and passes through Saint-Fromond and its surrounding hamlets.

Cycling

La Vélomaritime / EuroVelo 4 runs from Saint-Lô to Saint-Fromond via the towpath along the Vire. The Voie verte of La Vélomaritime / EuroVelo 4 towards Saint-Fromond is fully secured and very easy.
