History
Château de Lithaire was the centre of a large lordship under William the Conqueror and was dismantled at the beginning of the 13th century. A final battle took place at Mont Castre from 3 to 11 July 1944, in which the US 90th Division lost 5,000 men. Neolithic, Gallo-Roman and medieval remains have also been preserved at Mont Castre.

The “Les vieilles pierres du mont Castre” hiking route is easy, 6.9 kilometres long and takes 2 hours and 15 minutes. It offers a 180-degree view of the surrounding area.
The “Les vieilles pierres du mont Castre” route runs along former railway tracks and greenways. It follows the former route along which small mining wagons transported stone to Lithaire railway station for Paris and its major construction projects. Mont Castre is near a greenway and is also easily accessible by bicycle.
On site
At Mont Castre, there is a 3-kilometre circular trail marked with information boards, allowing visitors to explore the cultural heritage. The site includes a playground, a picnic area, parking spaces and toilets. Seasonally, pedal boats and a snack bar are available at Mont Castre.

The Mont Castre site is signposted from the D903 between La Haye-du-Puits and Carentan.
