Flamanville combines architectural heritage, coastal landscapes and maritime activities. It also offers insights into the region’s industrial history, as well as paths along the beach and cliffs and through the château grounds.

Coast and history in Flamanville

Construction of the Château de Flamanville began in 1654, and its perfectly symmetrical architecture is considered unique in the region. By decree of 6 January 1930, it was listed as a historic monument in France. The granite church of Flamanville dates from 1670. It contains a small vaulted chapel dedicated to Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners.

The Musée des Mines et des Carrières focuses on former underground iron ore mining beneath the sea and on the granite quarries. Numerous photographs and tools illustrate these subjects; a 30-minute film also shows the loading of the ore onto a ship and features statements from former miners.

Cliffs, beach and green walking trails

Anse de Sciotot has a 4-kilometre sandy beach. From the paths along the cliff edge, you can look out over the bay and beach. Havre Jouan is a small boat landing on the coast of Flamanville in Anse de Sciotot, which is known for its geology. Cap de Flamanville forms a rocky promontory with cliffs up to 89 metres high and offers hikers a panoramic view.

The Parc du Château de Flamanville covers almost 20 hectares; with ponds, winding paths and remarkable trees, it is ideal for walks. The Parc du Château de Flamanville also offers picnicking, freshwater fishing, model boat building and pétanque. The Jardin conservatoire de la Société Française du Dahlia preserves almost 1,000 dahlia varieties in a 6,700 m² garden that blooms from August to October.

Hiking and maritime experiences

For an active day, the easy “Entre bois et falaises” hike is available. The route is 9 kilometres long and takes 2 hours and 30 minutes. The long-distance GR 223 trail also runs along the rocky and sandy coasts of the Cotentin Peninsula and is one of the marked hiking trails providing access to Flamanville.

At Port Diélette, the Centre Nautique de Diélette offers sailing, dinghy sailing, catamaran sailing, kayaking and windsurfing. Hague Sud Plongée offers weekly boat trips from the nautical centre out to sea to explore the seabed. Shared by Flamanville and the neighbouring municipality of Tréauville, Port Diélette provides maritime shuttle services to the Channel Islands. From there, boat services run to Alderney, with a journey time of 55 minutes, and to Guernsey, with a journey time of 1 hour and 10 minutes.

A seasonal market takes place at Port Diélette on Sunday mornings, offering fruit and vegetables, seafood and a barbecue stand. The EDF Flamanville Centre d'Information du Public offers an educational trail of more than 400 m² about electricity, nuclear energy and the EPR, as well as panoramic views of the facilities.
