History

A commemorative ceremony is held every year in front of the monument to four resistance fighters of the Maquis Surcouf in Épaignes, on the Sunday closest to 4 August.

During the fighting to liberate Épaignes on 25 August 1944, the church was set on fire along with seven houses after incendiary devices had been placed in houses and in the church.

Culture

The Église Saint-Antonin in Épaignes dates largely from the 15th and 16th centuries; only the choir is of Romanesque origin. The church is open to the public.

Nature

The Chemin de la Baretterie is an easy hiking trail approximately 5.7 kilometres long, with a walking time of about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The trail passes through the bocage landscape typical of the Pays d’Auge, with sunken lanes, wet meadows, ditches and small ponds. 35% of the circular route runs between embankments planted with living hedges.

A sunken lane on the Chemin de la Baretterie can be particularly wet in winter; sturdy footwear or boots are therefore recommended.

The Sentier de la Biodiversité is a signposted circular trail reserved for pedestrians, approximately six kilometres long, with information panels and illustrated stations about the fauna and flora of the Norman bocage.
