The 5.8 km circular route “Autour de Chaise-Dieu” starts at Place Albert-de-Selle-de-Beauchamp and takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes on average. It is suitable for hiking and mountain biking. The paths are lined with hedgerows and pollard willows typical of this region of Normandy.

The grounds of Le Moulin de Chaise Dieu cover 12 hectares and include 3 km of river. They include Lac Émilie and five interconnected bodies of water that are constantly fed by the Iton. Chaise-Dieu-du-Theil is also located in an area designated as a “site inscrit”.

Culture and History

The church in Chaise-Dieu-du-Theil houses a bronze bell created in 1575 and classified as a protected historic object on 22 November 1941. An entrance building from the former monastery remains at the edge of the village’s main road. A dovecote and other elements of the former monastery that are less visible from the public road have also been preserved.

The priory was founded in the 12th century by Hugues du Desert and affiliated with the Order of Fontevraud. The Chapelle Saint-Jean was the church of the former double monastery located outside the convent. It was listed as a historic monument in 1971 and is owned by a local heritage conservation association. The Chapelle Saint-Jean houses paintings and objects from the former nuns’ priory.

The Mariette of Chaise-Dieu was rebuilt in 1826 following a road accident. It has two niches: a Madonna and Child to the west and a Deposition to the east.

Fishing

At Le Moulin de Chaise Dieu, dry-fly, booby, nymph and streamer fishing are possible. Introductory sessions, seminars and fly fishing with a casting rod are available by reservation.
