Tessel: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Church of Saint-Germain in Tessel contains the tomb of the priest Nicole Levilain, who died around 1400. The tomb includes a bas-relief and an inscription set into a wall niche. Since 23 May 1933, it has been classified as a protected movable object.

Landscape

Tessel lies on the edge of the Plain of Caen and the bocage. The Bordel is a tributary of the Seulles and runs for 2.527 km through Tessel before flowing into the Seulles at Fontenay-le-Pesnel. A promenade runs along its banks in Tessel.

History

The history of Tessel during the Second World War includes the Battle of Fontenay-Rauray, fought from 25 to 28 June 1944. During the fighting in 1944, hundreds of combatants fell on Tessel’s wooded ridge.

Heavy fighting took place in nearby Rauray during Operation Epsom, which aimed to capture Caen. At Brettevillette, German troops held the high ground, dominated the plain and thereby hampered the British advance. According to local tradition, Charlotte Corday is said to have visited the manor house of Bretteville a few days before her journey to Paris to visit her aunt, Madame de Bretteville.

The Fontenay-le-Pesnel military cemetery contains 509 grave markers. The cemetery is located 1 km southeast of the hamlet of St Martin on the D139 towards Grainville; opposite the monument to the 49th (West Riding) Division, a path leads directly to the cemetery.
