Culture and History

The church of Saint-Sever-Calvados is protected in its entirety as a historic monument; it was listed on 3 February 1881. The motte castrale of Saint-Sever was listed as a historic monument on 11 March 1983.

The Carmel de l'Hermitage was established in 1214, when hermits cleared a woodland clearing to build a small monastery there. Services in the chapel of the Carmel de l'Hermitage are open to the public.

The Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Sever-Calvados was founded around 1050 by Richard Goz, Viscount of Avranches, and his son Hugues le Loup at the site of the grave of Saint Severus. The Abbey of Saint-Sever offers a daily 3D tour in augmented reality, which can be accessed using an Android phone or a tablet borrowed free of charge.

Getting Around

The La Pierre Percée tourist route, also known as Route du granit, is an approximately 50-kilometre circular route through the minor roads of the Bocage, passing by Lac du Gast and the Chapelle de l'Hermitage in the Forêt de Saint-Sever.
