History

“Sur les pas des alliés” is a guided 2.5-hour walk to important D-Day sites in Hermanville-sur-Mer. Along the route, information panels describe the advance of the Allied forces.

The Hermanville-sur-Mer British Military Cemetery contains 1,005 graves, mostly belonging to British soldiers. Three French soldiers from Commando Kieffer are also buried there.

The Puits de la Mare Saint-Pierre supplied the Allied troops with nearly seven million litres of water from 6 June to 1 July 1944.

Culture

La Bluette is partly classified as a historic monument. Built by Hector Guimard in 1899, the building is one of the surviving examples of Art Nouveau in Hermanville-sur-Mer.

Among the oldest parts of the Église Saint-Pierre is a Romanesque nave dating from the 11th century. The Romanesque tower dates from the 12th and 13th centuries and ends in a terrace offering panoramic views. On 18 June 1944, the church hosted the first Mass in liberated France; the BBC broadcast it worldwide.

The Chapelle de la Brèche d’Hermanville-sur-Mer has borne the “Patrimoine du XXe siècle” label since 2004. The Hermanville-sur-Mer chapel contains a 52-metre-long stained-glass window that combines the motif of Saint Peter with that of the Allied landings.
