Discover Géfosse-Fontenay: Coast, Nature and History

Géfosse-Fontenay combines landscapes, architectural heritage and regional produce. Baie des Veys brings together mudflats and coastline; in the village, the Manoir de l’Hermerel, the Église and the WN 90 de Géfosse bunker represent different historical periods. Cidricchus processes apples from its own orchards into cider and spirits, while oyster farming has been carried out in the bay since 1970. As a result, in addition to its natural setting, the village also has a distinct agricultural and coastal character.

Nature watching at Baie des Veys

The mudflats of Baie des Veys are an important area for migratory birds to stop and feed. With a little luck, seals can be observed in Baie des Veys. For nature enthusiasts, the focus is therefore on the mudflats and the possibility of observing seals. Seal watching remains dependent on a favourable opportunity.

A nature event with set dates

Géfosse-Fontenay is associated with the event „Oiseaux migrateurs de la baie des Veys“ on three dates in 2026: 26 September, 14 October and 19 October. The individual dates do not fall on a single weekend but are spread throughout autumn 2026. As a result, alongside the bay itself, the topic of migratory birds also has a clearly defined period.

Historic buildings and their periods

At the Manoir de l’Hermerel, the main construction phases date from the 15th century and the fourth quarter of the 17th century; one building campaign is dated to 1676. The entrance portal, façades and roofs, chapel and dovecote were partially listed as historic monuments in 1975. The listing applies to these building components and not generally to the entire manor.

The Église in Géfosse-Fontenay has a main construction phase dating from the 13th century. Its choir was listed as a historic monument by decree of 18 March 1927. The WN 90 de Géfosse bunker is a former German bunker in Géfosse-Fontenay and a preserved element of the Atlantic Wall. The historical period therefore extends from the medieval church to a preserved structure of the Atlantic Wall.

Cider and oyster farming

At Cidricchus in Géfosse-Fontenay, apple cultivation leads directly to the products: apples from its own orchards are used to make cider and spirits. Cidricchus uses old or local apple varieties for its ciders. The production thus combines its own fruit growing with a distinctive selection of apples.

Oyster farming has been carried out in Baie des Veys since 1970. The oyster beds for Isigny special oysters are located along the coast between Grandcamp-Maisy and Géfosse-Fontenay. The coastal section containing the beds is therefore part of the bay’s regional surroundings and complements apple cultivation with a maritime product.
