Culture

Since 17 September 2003, the Musée Langlois has borne the designation « Musée de France » under the French Heritage Code. It contains paintings and sketches by Colonel Langlois depicting the panorama of the Battle of Solferino.

The courtyard of the priory next to Saint-Sauveur Church is open to visitors. Saint-Sauveur Church preserves, as an exceptional testimony, the Carolingian past of Beaumont-en-Auge from the 9th century. Its lantern tower became a place of worship and pilgrimage.

History

At the École Royale Militaire in Beaumont-en-Auge, 120 students were educated by the Congregation of Saint-Maur. The royal and military college of Beaumont-en-Auge was founded in 1776 by Louis XVI and educated more than 100 future officers of the king.

The priory of Beaumont-en-Auge was founded in 1060 at the request of a confidant of William the Conqueror, housed a Benedictine community, and was one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in Normandy. The Auberge du Coq Hardi dates from the 16th century and is one of the oldest houses in the village of Beaumont-en-Auge. The « maison bleue » is considered the oldest house currently preserved in Beaumont-en-Auge.

Townscape

La Grande Rue was already equipped with market halls in the Middle Ages and is now characterised by adjoining half-timbered houses dating from the 16th and 18th centuries.
