History

Vieil-Hesdin was once one of the most important towns in Artois, before Charles V destroyed the town in 1553 and ordered the construction of the new Hesdin the following year.

The remains of the Château des ducs de Bourgogne, also known as the château de Vieil-Hesdin, are protected in their entirety as an archaeological reserve. The designation was made by decree on 29 July 2005.

The automata of the castle and park of Hesdin date from the late 13th century; according to 14th-century accounts, they were more likely moving wooden figures resembling puppets.

Culture

The protected area of Château d'Estruval includes the façades and roofs of the château and two dovecotes, the courtyard grounds, the façades and roofs of the outbuildings, the grounds of their courtyard, the château park, as well as the lime-tree avenue and the avenue of purple beech trees known as the “route de Thérouanne”. The designation was made by decree on 13 March 2000.

The inhabited private estate Manoir Marceau can be visited by appointment for enquiries and projects, as well as to access the boutique; courses for all levels are available there year-round by appointment. At Manoir Marceau, it is also possible to enjoy a platter or a meal on site, in the garden or indoors.

The Church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in Vieil-Hesdin contains the high altar, the tabernacle, and the altarpiece.

Nature

Around Vieil-Hesdin, a hike on the Saint-Georges plateau offers a panorama of the Canche valley; the Hesdin forest lies in the background.
