The Dunes d'Écault stretch across Equihen-Plage and Saint-Étienne-au-Mont. Their landscape comprises embryonic dunes, white dunes with marram grass, grey dunes with mosses and lichens, shrub dunes – especially with sea buckthorn – and wooded dunes.

The Dunes d'Écault cover 158 ha and are 5 km long. The protected area of the Dunes d'Écault includes Saint-Étienne-au-Mont; the protected area covers 162.51 ha.
The Écault natural area comprises 4 km of coastline with fine sand, 150 ha of dune massifs and 350 ha of wooded massifs. The Dunes d'Écault formed as they developed over an earlier cliff made of sandstone and marl.
The Dunes d'Écault are of natural-historical interest for their plant, bird, mammal, insect, amphibian and reptile species.
Hiking and Trails
The 4.7-km-long Sentier des dunes runs through the Dunes d'Écault. The site naturel d'Écault also offers nine walking trails.
The Sentier Communal d'Écault includes a botanical loop trail where visitors can discover the local flora. Along some of the trails in the site naturel d'Écault, information panels provide details about local history, fauna, flora and the formation of the landscape.
The Sentier de la Chapelle offers panoramic views of Equihen-Plage, the English Channel, Boulogne-sur-Mer and its basilica. Along this trail, visitors can observe warblers, wagtails, butterflies and dragonflies. Access to the Sentier de la Chapelle is via the Stade de la Cachaine car park on Rue du Stade in Saint-Étienne-au-Mont.
Culture and History
The Chapelle d'Écault dates from the 12th century and preserves the only surviving examples of Cistercian architecture in the whole of northern France.
The Chemin des Juifs, a relic from the Second World War, can be walked along the Sentier des Ifs.
