History and Townscape
The name Maresville is derived from “Sancta Maria Villa”, meaning “estate of Saint Mary”. The first houses were grouped around a chapel dedicated to the Mother of God. In the 12th century, the founding chapel was placed under the patronage of Saint Maur.
The Church of Saint-Maur dates from the modern era. Judging by graffiti carved into its walls, it is believed to have been built before 1679. The bell gable of the Church of Saint-Maur was rebuilt in the 20th century.
Among the memorial plaques in Maresville is a plaque made of Belgian granite, mounted on the chimney of the room serving as the town hall. A second, identical memorial plaque is located in the church of Maresville.
