A prominent landmark of the village is the Église Saint-Laurent. Its pink bell tower is emblematic of Prémesques. The church was rebuilt after 1918 and inaugurated in 1928; it continues to serve for religious ceremonies as well as gospel and choral concerts.
When planning your own trip, you may wish to rent a holiday apartment in Prémesques.
History
The Batterie de Prémesques, formerly also known as Fort Sénarmont, was built from 1878 to 1885. It is a war relic and part of a belt of fortifications. Its purpose was to defend the railway line and the national road from Lille to Dunkirk, as well as the crossing routes in the Armentières plain.
In October 1914, Prémesques was the scene of a decisive battle that fixed the front east of Armentières for several years. During the fighting, the 2nd Leinster Regiment suffered 434 casualties in three days and withdrew to its original positions in La Chapelle d’Armentières.
The Monument aux morts de Prémesques commemorates the soldiers from the municipality who fell in the First World War. It bears the coat of arms of the De Nouvelles family, the former lords of the village. Tartagrosbord, a named giant figure popular with the children of Prémesques, is also part of the village landscape.
Hiking
The “La campagne de Prémesques” hiking route is 10.44 km long, easy, takes an average of three hours, and returns to the starting point. It begins at the church car park, passes an oratory and follows local roads, ending again at the church car park. There are benches at the beginning and end, but not in the middle; even in very wet weather, the route has no muddy paths.
Transport
The Transpole KEOLIS bus routes 79 and 80 operate in the municipality. Route 79 serves Wez-Macquart on the La Chapelle d’Armentières side, while route 80 serves Prémesques – Le Centre and Prémesques – La Montagne.
